Why do people become Christians?

There are barriers that can stop someone from becoming a Christian. On the one hand you might think that there is no evidence that God is real. On the other hand you may think that God is not someone that you would really enjoy knowing even if he is real.
Yet men and women, young and old from all nationalities become Christians. Millions of people from all walks of life have found out that the God of the Bible is real in a very powerful and personal way. Millions of Christians know that God is someone who cares about them and he has changed their lives for the better. Whoever you are and no matter what you have done, Jesus cares about you and he is concerned about what you are going through. He wants to help you and to give you a life that is worth living. I want to show you that Jesus is someone that you really would want to know! Let’s look at some of the reasons why people choose to become Christians. Some people become Christians after they see how Jesus has changed the life of a relative or a friend. Others turn to God in a time of need. Here's some ways that God can meet our needs.

God changes lives for the better.

God loves you and will forgive anyone who turns to him.
He can heal you of any sickness.
He can set you free of gambling, drug addictions and anything that is controlling and ruining your life.
He can give you strength to cope with whatever you may be facing in the present.
If you are hurting because of the things that happened in your past then God can heal you of that pain and give you a fresh start.
You can be set free of all fear including the fear of death.
He can help heal broken relationships or help you cope after a relationship is lost.
You can know him in a real and powerful way.
You can know his love, peace and joy.
He is your Creator and you were designed to know him, he is the ‘something’ that is missing from our lives.
He is interested in you and has a great plan and purpose for your life.
God provides for all our needs and you can be assured of his protection.
It is only through Jesus that you can have a sure hope of living forever in a wonderful place.
No one who has ever lived is like Jesus. He taught about love and forgiveness, he gave up his life to save us and he prayed that the people who executed him would be forgiven.

I'm not talking about empty religion. I'm talking about having a real and exciting relationship with God. Being outwardly religious can be boring but knowing Jesus is like nothing you've ever known.
I don't want to give you the idea that becoming a Christian will make your life easy. That’s not what I’m saying. Sometimes life can seem harder after you become a Christian. What I am saying is that having Jesus in your life is worth it because when Jesus is in your life you are never on your own, he is there by your side to help you.
I believe that God is real and that not only can he make himself real to you but he earnestly wants to. He really can change your life for the better. You are not an accident. God has a great plan for your life. No matter who you are or what you have done, he loves you more than you can imagine.

Jesus tells us to ask, seek and knock (Mat 7:7). All you need to do is ask God to make himself real to you and if you really want him to, then he will reveal himself to you in a way that is very real to you.
A good way to start is by just talking to God (what Christians call praying). You could say something like the following. You can change the words to suit your own situation but the important thing is to be sincere and to be open to God and ask him to become real in your life.

‘God I am not sure if you are real but I give you this opertunity to reveal yourself to me. If you are real, if you are a kind and loving God and have a good plan and purpose for my life then make yourself real to me. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.’

When Christians get together, Jesus shows up. More miracles happen inside Churches and God talks to people in a powerful way when Christians get together. If you want to know God in a real way then the best way to do that is to get together with Christians who are ‘on fire’ for God.

If you want to get to know God, I recommend that you do the following.

Ask Jesus to forgive you and to make you born again (Follow the link if you are not sure how to become a Christian)
Find a church that is ‘alive’
Attend an Alpha course
Pray every day (Talk to God)
Read the Bible. Use a modern translation like the New Living Translation and start reading from the book of ‘John’ (see the index). Here is a website where you can read the Bible online for free in easy-to-understand English
