Who made God?

Life is very complex and it contains numerous complex systems. The laws of physics and the Earth are finely tuned for life. Clearly that requires an explanation but when sceptics are asked to explain the existence of the Universe and life’s complexity, one popular response is to ask “Ok if God made the Universe then who made God?”
But the question “Who made God?” is not an appropriate question to ask about God because God did not have a beginning and only things that have a beginning need to be made. The hard part for us, is trying with our limited understanding and experience to comprehend how such a powerful God could just happen to exist without needing to be created. In modern society we are used to thinking in terms of cause and effect. When we want to understand how something happens we ask, “What was it that caused it?” That is a natural and perfectly logical way of thinking and it is a valid way of thinking about things that wear out. Things that exist in the time-space-matter world undergo change and change tends to reduce the complexity when it's given enough time. So when we see something complex in the world around us, we rightly assume it must have had a beginning and that something or someone caused it to come into existence.

But why doesn’t God need a cause?

Since God is eternal and since he made the time-space-matter universe he exists outside of time, space and matter, so God is not controlled by time or the effects of time because he controls time. God is independent of time; he has no beginning and he has no end, so he is not subject change and therefore he does not grow old or wear out. Is 40:28 , 1 Tim 1:17 & Heb13:8
God is complex but his complexity is in a constant (unchanging) state. But how could God just happen to exist?
We live in the gold fish bowl of time, space and matter and that influences the way we think about things. We are not used to an eternal existence and so we try to apply the same rules to eternity that apply to us. Even some very intelligent people fall for that trap. But to understand how God could exist we need to change the way we think about God and his existence. We need to imagine what it is like outside the goldfish bowl. In our goldfish bowl, it takes us time to do things. To travel a short distance takes a short time and to travel a long distance will take more time. Our thinking is bound up with our experience of time, unlike God we are controlled by time. For us time is a limitation and we can’t imagine what it is like not to be limited by time. We can’t imagine what it would be like to be able to do everything instantly or to have no beginning or end. I believe that God deliberately created the physical universe in the way that he has so that we would be able to tell instinctively that since it is a complex universe and that since there are things in it that are complex that they must have been made by a powerful God. The problems start when we apply that way of thinking to God and his existence. We blow a fuse in our head just trying to picture an infinite universe and it doesn’t get any easier trying to image what God is like. As I wrote at the start of this article only things that have a beginning need to be made. God did not have a beginning because God exists independently of time and only things that exist within time require a beginning.

How did the universe get here?

Most scientists now believe that the Universe itself had a beginning. That implies that something caused it to exist, so what was that cause? We need to explain the existence of the space-time Universe in terms of cause and effect. In other words we need to ask, “How did the Universe get here?”
To paraphrase Allan Meyer,  The only equation you need to know about the Big Bang is

  0 + 0 = 0.

If you start with nothing and you add nothing to it, you end up with nothing.

Starting with God as an explanation has to be better than starting with nothing. Nothing can do nothing. God can do everything. God is a plausible cause for the existence of the universe and nothing is not.
In short, there must have been something there to begin with and that something needed some kind of trigger to get things started. What was that trigger? I believe that the trigger includes God’s ability to plan, his ability to make choices and his power to create. It could not have been the laws of physics, as we know them because if you are starting from the idea of the Big Bang then the laws of physics don’t help you to understand the cause. If the Big Bang were true then the Universe would have started in something called a singularity. The laws of physics don’t work in a singularity and that means that scientists can only guess at what things might have been like under those conditions.

Where did conscience awareness come from?

Another question is where did our conscience awareness come from? It is something that has neurosurgeons baffled since they can’t pinpoint an exact location in the brain that causes our conscience awareness. Not only that but the Bible talks about people existing outside their bodies (2 Cor 5:8) . Don Piper in his book “90 Minutes in Heaven” claims that he was at the gates of Heaven while his body was dead and he is not alone in making claims like that. I believe that our conscience awareness is evidence that the universe must have its origin from a being who is conscience himself in order for him to create consciousness and if anything his state of consciousness can only be superior to our own.

We are given a choice

While there are some very brilliant minds that have tried to come up with some very clever ways of avoiding the issue, it seems to me that even a child knows that things have a cause. People like that are only trying to avoid having to believe in God. 
God looks at the heart, he loves everyone and wants everyone to be with him forever but he wants willing servants, people who love him from their hearts, not robots that have no choice. So life is not a test to see how smart we are, it is a chance for us to choose God if we are willing to believe in him. God deliberately created a Universe where people who are willing to seek him have all the evidence that they need but at the same time people who want to reject him are able to convince themselves that God does not exist.
Jesus said 
Mark 10:15 “I assure you, anyone who doesn’t have their [a child’s] kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God.” (NLT)
Children are inquisitive, they think about things and ask questions and so should we. Jesus told us to love God with all our minds so we should not burry our heads in the sand. However our trust should not ultimately be in our own limited understanding but in our loving Heavenly Father ( Prov. 3:5-6 ). We are only shooting ourselves in the foot if we go out of our way to look for clever ways of denying his existence. Especially since when you get to know God, you find out that he is a great God to know and that he cares about us and that he has a great plan for our lives.

Finding God

Now if God had not revealed himself to mankind and if miracles did not happen and if there was no evidence of design in the things we see around us then I could accept that it would be asking a lot for people to believe in God. If you want to find God, then he will not be hard to find. No matter what you may think you know; God can make himself real to you if you want him to be.
The best way to start is by simply asking him to make himself real to you. You don’t need to know any special words, praying is just talking to God. The next steps are to search out the evidence and to go to a good church.
